Traders are bracing themselves for the surge in demand for bacon over Christmas and the new year - and the logistical headaches.
Danish traders said trade was a little better compared with the sluggish picture last week “but not up to full speed yet”. “It won’t get really big until next week when December arrives and people switch from buying one item a week to suddenly wanting 100. Then all the retailers want everything at the last minute in the 10 days before Christmas and we run out of lorries.”
The Dutch reported trade as reasonable, with prices a little lower this week as oversupply continued. One trader added: “Pressure will be relieved when the Dutch buy a lot of pork loin for St Nicholas Day early in December.”
