Scotland's mussel sector has received a £500,000 boost with new and improved grading facilities.

The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group's Blueshell Mussels in Shetland has launched the mussel grading centre, which will cater for 14 of Scotland's shellfish farms.

With the capacity to handle in excess of 2,000 tonnes per year, the new facility will account for more than 60% of Shetland's shellfish produce - over 80% of which will go on to be SSMG produce sold in UK and Continental supermarkets.

Michael Laurenson of Blueshell said: "By offering other farmers the service, we allow them to remain focused on their ability to grow mussels to the best quality possible."

The new facility has been installed with help from the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance, the Shetland Development Trust, Shetland Council and Clydesdale Bank.
