Waitrose is introducing a range of 50cl bottles as part of a pledge to increase its range of smaller bottles of wine by 50%.

The Vin a Deux brand consists of eight French wines from producers including J Moreau and Louis Bernard, which have previously only been available in restaurants.

The move follows last week's call by The British Medial Journal to reduce the size of standard bottles to combat binge drinking.

"Drinking Vin a Deux will dispense with that unfinished bottle of wine or feeling the need to finish off a full bottle," said Waitrose wine buyer Nick Room.

The rosé wines in the range will initially appear in green glass bottles, usually reserved for red and white wines only, as a Europe-wide glass shortage has prevented the supplier delivering clear 50cl bottles until May, said Waitrose.

Smaller formats are becoming popular in the wine aisles, with several brands adding smaller bottles to their ranges last year.
