UK seafood processor Mariner Foods has gone into administration, citing a lack of raw materials and loss of contracts.

The Grimsby-based firm – which used to supply some of Aldi’s ‘Specially Selected seafood range’ - ceased trading on 5 May, with Kingsbridge Corporate Solutions appointed as administrators yesterday.

Mariner Foods was formed in 2012 after five private investors united to take over the vacant factory at Great Grimsby Business Park, which was previously operated by Icelandic manufacturer Bakkavor Group.

A spokesman for Kingsbridge said Mariner Foods had invested “heavily” in the factory, equipment and facilities, but fell into trouble following difficult trading conditions in recent months.

“A loss of customers and a lack of supplies of key, strategic raw materials led to a reduced turnover leaving the business unsustainable,” he explained.

The majority of staff at the factory were offered employment with other local businesses, but a few redundancies “could not be avoided”, the spokesman added.
