Marks and Spencer has introduced low carb areas in all stores.
Head of food Maurice Helfgott said even its Simply Food c-stores now had ‘no carb, low carb’ areas carrying products like salads and new low carb sandwich wraps.
Helfgott said the areas would appeal to all health-conscious consumers, even those not devoted to the Atkins regime.
M& S is experimenting with a variety of locations for Simply Food - from city centres to out-of-town retail parks - to find out where it worked best. A trial of an outlet at Manchester airport was proving a success and a second trial store was set to open at Heathrow.
Food sales were £3.5bn for the 53 weeks to April 3, up from £3.2bn for the 52 weeks to March 29 2003.
Like-for-like food sales for the year were up 1.6%.
Group pre-tax profit for the year to April 3 was £805m, up 6%, although that included a 53rd week this year. Annual turnover of £8.3bn was down 0.4% on a like-for-like basis.
