Proponents of the benefits of Omega-3 have rounded on a scientific paper shedding doubt on the claim that the fatty acid is beneficial to heart health.

The British Medical Journal gained widespread media coverage for its analysis of 89 studies that concluded there was no clear evidence that Omega-3 had any specific benefits.

But Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation boss Sid Patten said: "Promoting this new study as contradicting more than 5,000 scientific papers testifying to the positive effects on health of Omega-3 consumption is misleading and potentially dangerous for the nation's health."
