Californian brand Turning Leaf posted a 45% rise in off-trade sales last year, according to ACNielsen (MAT to end of December 06).

The performance helped brand owner, The Gallo Family Vineyards, achieve a 24% increase in off-trade sales overall to 5.5 million nine-litre cases. Other star performers include McWilliam's, which recorded 76.3% growth and Sierra Valley bag-in-box, which grew 118%.

Sierra Valley White Grenache and Zinfandel were up 24% and 40% respectively. "Consumers are recognising the quality of the brands and trading up," said UK off-trade director Mark Tinsley.
