Eblex has urged butchers and retailers to use a variety of cheaper cuts of lamb to entice consumers back into the category.

Volume sales have fallen 5% in the past year [TNS, 52w/e 25 May], while penetration has dropped 2% and average weight of purchase by 4%. Higher prices were to blame, according to Eblex, with lamb costing 20% more year-on-year.

However, cheaper cuts were selling well, with mince volumes up 13% and stewing cuts 12%, while shoulder was down 19%, said retail project manager Mike Whittemore.
