Asda outlined its plans to expand operations in London and the South East today, with the Walmart-owned supermarket claiming a “clear 5-year strategy”.

Two new high street stores will open in London this July, in Deptford and Wealdstone, with a focus on the convenience ranges and a prominent Click & Collect desk.

These two developments, at a time when Morrisons is “pressing pause” on their convenience and high street sectors with the failing M Local stores, herald a new direction for Asda that will focus on their standalone petrol station sites, the first London location of which was revealed as White Hart Lane in Tottenham.

“We’ve been clear about our strategic ambition to expand into London and the South East and customers tell us that a convenient and great value shopping experience is important to them,” said Craig Bonnar, Asda’s VP for store development. ”These new sites will allow us to bring Asda value to even more customers.”
