Asda Norwich

Asda claimed a second consecutive Grocer 33 victory this week.

The Walmart-owned retailer’s £82.39 total was £4.07 cheaper than second-placed Morrisons. Asda’s victory was based on consistently low prices across the board. This week it offered the lowest price for 18 of the 33 items on our list, with 15 of these exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals.

Among these products were the black grapes, crispy potato slices and Genius fruit loaf, but the products on which it most undercut its rivals were the ham, Quorn mince and own-label sausage rolls. A Rollback deal on the Garnier Micellar water from £5 to £3 meant it was £2 cheaper than any of its rivals for that line alone.

However, despite the win, Asda still had to provide our shopper with a hefty Price Guarantee voucher worth £5.51.

In contrast to Asda, Morrisons only managed to offer the cheapest price on seven items with just the McCain French fries exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals. However, it claimed the runner-up spot thanks to particularly keen prices on the Kelly’s ice cream and the Sheba catfood.

Sainsbury’s came in third this week. Its £87.76 total was £5.37 more expensive than Asda. It was exclusively cheaper than its rivals for the basmati rice and Philadelphia soft cheese.

Tesco was £7.46 more expensive than Asda at £89.85. The difference was exaggerated due to the cost of the beef roasting joint, which was pro-rated to meet a size of 1.6kg. Its per kilo price was still higher than Asda, despite recent price cuts across its fresh meat range.

The higher per kilo price for the beef also adversely affected Waitrose. Its total was £15.81 more expensive than Asda at £98.20. Other than this, it was cheaper than any of its rivals for the Bertolli spread, the Coca-Cola and Onken Biopot.
