It could be a rocky start to the Spanish strawberry season following a period of severely cold weather. Temperatures have dropped to as low as -9°C over the last couple of weeks, leaving fruit unripe when it would normally be reaching maturity.
Sainsbury soft fruit buyer Craig Sibbit said quality would still be good and volumes would ultimately be satisfactory, but fruit could be short early on as a result of the unseasonally cold conditions.
He added: “There’s a lot of green fruit over there because it’s not been developing at such low temperatures.”
