New varieties expanding New English strawberry varieties Everest and Everglade, which have combined good flavour, shape and longer shelflife, are giving growers confidence to expand production. Members of BerryWorld, the soft fruit marketing group with strawberry exclusivity from Kent breeder Edward Vinson, have seen these varieties make a substantial contribution to the group's sales, which also include out-of-season imported berries. MD Adam Olins says BerryWorld sales have already passed the £20m mark this season, and with another three months remaining, the final result should be 25% larger than last season. This week the company reached an agreement with Vinson for a fixed period, which gives it exclusive rights to trial and market other varieties bred in the future. It has also introduced an interest-free loan scheme worth £500,000 available to all growers to encourage investment plans. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
