The Soil Association has slammed the UK’s leading supermarkets over their sourcing policies for organic meat. It said that the retailers are shunning British organic beef and pork in favour of cheaper imports.

A survey carried out in November found that only a fifth of organic pork in Morrisons and Asda was from British farms. Half the organic pork and beef in Tesco was also imported.

A spokesman for the Soil Association said that as well as supporting British farmers buying British guarantees the highest standards of animal welfare and cuts down unnecessary food miles.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Our preference is to source from the UK, however this isn’t always possible.”
