Ocado will be deploying back-up vans in London to relieve drivers stuck in traffic during the Olympic Games, as other grocers opt for a limited service in the capital.

The online grocer said the vans will be on stand-by at its London spokes ready to be dispatched to take orders from drivers who are stuck in traffic. It has also worked with Transport for London to plan alternative routes around road closures so that no customers are cut off during the Games.

Other grocers are scaling back their delivery operations in London. Asda said it would be offering a limited service in some areas of the city. “We’d rather be over-cautious than disappoint anyone,” it said.

Tesco and Waitrose said there would be a small number of addresses they would be unable to reach due to road restrictions. Waitrose said the affected area - around the olympic Park in Stratford - represented about 1% of total postcodes in London.
