Ocado has taken to Twitter to mock Asda’s launch of a same-day Click & Collect service - pointing out that Ocado has offered same-day delivery since 2009.

After press reports Asda was launching a same-day delivery service, the online retailer poked fun at it in a series of tweets using the hashtag ‘oldnews’ and retweets likening its newsworthiness to the moon landings and the arrival of the internet.

Asda revealed the move, which does not actually cover online deliveries, as part of a £700m investment to expand its multichannel business and expand Click & Collect to 200 stores.

The same-day service, which is expected to be free, will allow customers to pick up their shopping from a store or petrol station by 3pm provided they order by 10am.

The retailer will trial the service over the summer before rolling it out to more customers. It has not released any information about how much of the UK the service will cover.

Ocado offers a same-day service to 25% of its customers, although this will expand to 33% later this month following the opening of its second distribution centre in Dordon, Warwickshire.
