Morrisons is expanding its Bridgwater distribution centre so that it can open more convenience stores in the South West of England.

It is opening a 95,000 sq ft facility on the site that will give Bridgwater the capacity to serve up to 100 M local c-stores. Morrisons currently has 10 c-stores in the region, including Royal Wootton Bassett and Bath.

“We already have picking and distribution expertise at Bridgwater, and it makes commercial sense to leverage that expertise to support the growth of our convenience business in the region,” said Morrisons’ head of multichannel distribution and infrastructure John Passman.

The new facility will also support Morrisons’ convenience distribution centre in Feltham during busy periods. Up to 50 jobs are expected to be created as the facility moves towards full capacity.

Despite the move, Morrisons said its target to double its c-store estate to 200 by the end of the 2014/15 financial year had not changed.
