Somerfield has pledged to sell only Scottish chicken through its Scottish portfolio of stores.
The company launched its Scottish chicken range during the Royal Highland Show, with sampling on its stand.
A spokesman for the retailer said: “The launch of Scottish Chicken strengthens Somerfield’s commitment to Scottish farmers and responds to increasing demand from Scottish shoppers who want to support the local economy.”
The new range is being produced for Somerfield by the Grampian Country Food Group.
Scott Bulmer, retail business unit director, said: “Somerfield has a long history of trading in Scotland and we’re delighted to be supplying them with a truly Scottish product.”
Somerfield said that the new launch was one of many regional lines it has launched, the first being West Country Beef in 2002.
The new chicken range will consist of six lines ranging from whole birds to breasts, and thighs to drumsticks.
