Sir, It’s great to read that investment is being made in companies that seek to reduce food waste (‘Food waste company gets growth cash,’ 23 January).
Winnow has an interesting concept and is proving that waste can be reduced. However, we need to look further down the waste hierarchy at where unavoidable waste is ending up.
Parliament is now eschewing landfill, but despite ongoing environmental issues, there is still too much food and drink being incinerated, simply because it’s not being separated from other types of waste.
We are working with some high-profile retailers that champion the use of anaerobic digestion for food waste recycling. However, there is still not a groundswell of support within the sector for segregated food waste collections. It must be morally wrong for food waste to go up in smoke!
