Fisherman's Friend is ramping up production of its lozenges following a 43% sales leap driven by consumers using the aniseed variant as a swine flu preventative.

Brand owner Lofthouse of Fleetwood said increasing awareness that aniseed was one of the key ingredients in swine flu cure Tamiflu had helped push overall sales up 43% to £5.5m in the three months to September 2009.

"We have been overwhelmed by the response towards our aniseed variant and are having to increase production to keep up with demand," said Rob Metcalfe, spokesman for Fisherman's Friend.

"The latest statistics show that swine flu cases are already on the rise this winter 78,000 new cases in the past week so we expect sales to soar even further, about 30%, over the winter months," he said.

Sales of winter remedies have soared 13.2% to £267m in the past year [TNS].
