The European Commission has asked the WTO to rule on whether its newly proposed lower tariff for Latin American banana imports is acceptable.
Last month, the Commission reduced its initial proposal of E230/tonne - opposed by Latin American countries and subsequently rejected by the WTO - to E187/tonne.
EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said: “We now need to bring an end to this dispute. For too many years it has poisoned relations between the developing countries that sell bananas to Europe.”
Caribbean producers have said that the lower rate will destroy their businesses.
