Morrisons is trialling EID ear tag technology which it calls the “missing piece in the jigsaw” of sheep breeding.

The prototype ear tags allow breeders to link individual carcase weights and grades back to specific breeds or lines - enabling them to selectively breed quality lambs.

“We are delighted to work with the industry to develop an in-plant system that can take an accurate supply of performance data from the individual carcase right back to farm level,” said Morrisons agriculture manager Louise Welsh.

Ian Watson, chairman of Farmstock and a major Morrisons supplier said: “This could transform the way we manage our breeding programmes.”
