The development of clamshell' packaging for grapes in the US could soon revolutionise how the fruit is retailed, claims its innovator Sun World International. Clamshell is the name given to established soft fruit packaging which in simple terms is a one piece clear plastic punnet with a tightly fitting lid. It is widely used for soft fruit. However Sun World reports that the 2lb grape container, which is stackable and can be barcoded, has already reduced instore weight by 75%. In the UK grapes are often considered notoriously difficult to handle because of their perishability. Some fruit is prepacked but the majority is displayed in unsealed bags. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
