Tesco has revamped its premium bottled beer range in order to maintain its dominant share of the sector. It is listing the best sellers, putting more emphasis on regional brews and giving micros a chance to gain local listings. Last year Tesco increased its share of the bottled ale market by 44%, achieving a 38% share of the sector [TNS MAT Dec '99]. Key to the new range will be the winners of its Beer Challenge. This spring the top two, both bottle conditioned, are from St Austell Brewery and Hop Back in Salisbury. Past winners such as McEwan's No 1 Champion Ale and Badger Golden Champion will stay on the shelves. Regional ranges will be selected and distributed via the main depots at Weybridge, Middlewich, Crick, Magor, Dundee and Welham Green. The aim is to have the beers delivered to the depots then supplied to local stores. Each depot serves between 100 and 150 outlets. Larger stores will have the opportunity to select local products delivered by the brewer direct to the store. The local operators are being invited to approach the store managers who will pass on requests to head office. An additional feature to the new range will be hot spots featuring special event or commemorative brews. {{DRINKS }}
