Tesco has launched a Dairy Centre of Excellence in a move aimed at improving its farmer suppliers’ on-farm production standards.

The supermarket has teamed up with the University of Liverpool to work with farmers and experts on issues such as animal welfare, environmental best practice, milk quality and consumer trends. Researchers studying lameness, fertility and calf health will feed their findings directly to the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group.

The centre at Wood Park Farm, Wirral, will also look for ways to bring commercial benefits to Tesco dairy farmers through efficiencies and product innovation, the retailer said. The site was chosen for its proximity to Tesco milk pools in Cheshire and Lancashire.

“We will work with producers, processors and industry members to focus on tomorrow’s challenges today, test technologies and develop best practices,” said Tesco dairy category manager Alain Guilpain.
