Tesco is to source an extra £15m worth of fresh British produce this year.

Research by the supermarket has found new ways to grow fruit and vegetables outside of the traditional British seasons.

Fresh produce category director at Tesco, Steve Murrells, said: “Britain is well known for its poor weather and erratic climate, but by working with suppliers we have developed new ways to beat it.

“Extending the season not only benefits British farmers by increasing their yields but it is also good news for customers and the local economy.”

An extra 19,000 tonnes of potatoes, 490 tonnes of strawberries and 150,000 kilos of cucumbers will be sourced from the UK this Year.
