Researchers at Tesco's Dairy Centre of Excellence are to study ways of reducing the environmental impact of milk production.

The supermarket, which opened a new visitor centre at the site in Liverpool last week, said further reducing dairy's impact was a key goal for 2010. Last year researchers focused on cow lameness, fertility and nutrition.

The visitor centre will host educational visits from local schools as well as act as a resource point.

Tesco carbon-labelled milk cartons last year and now has 10% of milk containers in recycled packaging.
