Tesco has lured Master of Wine Laura Jewell from Spar to head up its wine team.
Spar's wine controller will fill the shoes of Pierpaolo Petrassi MW as senior product development manager for wine at the UK’s largest retailer. Petrassi starts work at Waitrose as head of wines, beers, spirits and tobacco on 19 July.
Tesco product development managers Graham Nash and James Griswood will handle the wine business until Jewell begins in the new role. Her arrival date has yet to be confirmed.
While Petrassi had special responsibility for Italy, Australia and Champagne, Jewell's regions have yet to be finalised, a Tesco spokesperson said.
Last May Jewell was recognised for her work on Spar's wines at the Drinks Business Awards, where she won retail buyer of the year.
She joined Spar in May 2009, having previously worked as wine buyer at Sainsbury's and for wine agency HWCG.
