Tesco has donated more than five million meals for families living in food poverty since the beginning of the year.

The figure was boosted to 5.1 million meals following its latest Neighbourhood Food Collection, which took place in every store across the UK between 3-5 July.

The collection was held in partnership with foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare.

It takes the nationwide total of meals provided since the campaign began in December 2012 to 15.3 million meals, including a 30% top-up from Tesco.

During the collection, customers were asked to donate non-perishable food items such as long-life milk, cereals and tinned vegetables and fruit.

“The response from our customers, colleagues and volunteers has been incredible and I’d like to thank everyone for their help in reaching this fantastic total,” said Tracey Clements, community and customer experience director at Tesco.
