Tesco has recorded three successive weeks of record deliveries from its Tesco.com site, despite the economic chill and thousands of cancelled orders due to last weekend’s snow.
Tesco.com recorded a 14% year-on-year hike in sales in the six weeks to 7 January and said the site had continued the upwards curve into February. Internet retailing director for Tesco Ken Towle said the operation had been “pulling out all the stops”.
Tesco admitted it had been forced to cancel a “substantial amount” of deliveries due to the snow, but said it had done everything possible to inform customers and minimise the impact.
It is the latest in a string of retailers to announce that online sales have outperformed growth in store revenues. Tesco CEO Philip Clarke has identified its online operations as a major focus for its fightback against falling market share, although much of the growth has been driven not by deliveries, but from click and collect services.
