Spanish wines in general are selling extremely well throughout The Co-operative Group and we have seen growth of 8.1% [Nielsen w/e 27 January, 2007]. This is a great position for us given the current Great Britain figures for Spanish wine, which are more or less flat over the same time period.

Rioja has always been a key region for our customers, especially over the Christmas period, but we have experienced very strong sales from our Spanish whites and rosé wines from areas other than Rioja.

We have seen growth of 31.2% for sparkling wines and Cava has played a key part in this growth.

The growth in sales of rosé wines through the off-trade could also be beneficial to the growth in Spanish wines overall but looking forward there will be tough competition from a number of other countries.

Rosé wines from Spain will have to be able to compete on price, quality and packaging.
