In five to six years’ time, salads, herbs and pot plant glasshouse crops in the UK will be grown and packed by robotic systems, said Jorn Rosager of Denmark-based robotics manufacturer Danish Greenhouse Supply.
Standard industrial robots would become cheaper and cheaper, said Rosager.
In Denmark, mobile bench systems had led to radical changes to glasshouses.
Production was up by three and half times and there had been earlier and heavier yields. “Peppers are showing promise and while tomatoes are not yet successful, they will come,” he predicted. Dutch growers had also begun to use the systems.
