Christmas puds came under the spotlight as our shoppers hunted down a bargain this week. Morrisons at Tynemouth offered a good buy at £1.99 plus a free brandy sauce worth £1.05, but the cheapest was Asda's at Pentwyn. Although marked £1.88 on the pack, it scanned as £1.78 at the checkout.

The same happened on Asda baked beans proving that last week's lower price wasn't a one week wonder. Although price marked at 23p, the can was scanned as 21p.

Shelf edge prices of onions at Tesco, Roborough, were a bit of a mystery, and even more mystifying when our shopper was charged just 8p/454g.

At Somerfield, Alton, Tetley teabags bypassed the scanner and were not charged on the till receipt.

Frozen food held up well on the out of stock front. Only Somerfield had supply problems - no medium chickens and only six large birds left. Sainsbury had cut the price of 1.6kg frozen chickens by £1 in line with other chains, but its Huntingdon store only had the dearer basted ones.

Best buys included 30p off Weetabix at Safeway, Bishopbriggs, and Morrisons' 33p off Anchor spreadable. Asda's basket at Pentwyn was the cheapest at £38.18.
