Yesterday this column wondered whether Marks & Spencer shareholders would feel a bit underwhelmed by the conservative strategy outlined by Marc Bolland in return for their golden hello.

Today, Sainsbury’s golden boy Justin King was back in the spotlight. After last month unveiling what represented some pretty impressive sales growth considering the state of the market, that performance was fleshed out this morning with an increase in underlying profits of around 8%.

King, of course, could talk a good game even when 5-0 down at half-time. He’s also something of a rarity at the top end of the industry in having been in his job more than five minutes.

In last weekend’s edition of The Grocer, editor Adam Leyland spoke to all the new generals and weighed up how they will deploy their troops in the manoeuvres ahead.

No-one knows when King will abdicate, except maybe the man himself. Still, Sainsbury’s insiders have long maintained that a succession plan is already well in place.

With grumbles over whether Bolland could ever justify that £15m wedge, here’s a final nudge towards our latest Salary Survey – your chance to find out how much you’re really worth.

Just answers a few straightforward questions and you could win £100. That’s not bad for five minutes’ work – even for Marks & Spencer's new chief.
