Cosmetics are a rarity in the Grocer Gold Awards, even more so in own label, but this didn’t stop Poundland’s Make Up Gallery from storming to victory.
The 144-strong range - including nail varnish, mascara, concealer and lipgloss - would be right at home in the most prestigious department store, making the range’s £1 price point genuine value for money.
The fact Poundland had to freight in extra stock to keep up with demand in the run-up to Christmas speaks volumes about consumer response to the goods.
The judges were wowed by the speed at which Make Up Gallery was brought to market by the Poundland team and its suppliers, and had high praise for the “engaging coherent range”.
They added: “Such an extensive and innovative range, representing great value to the Poundland shopper in a category not generally recognised for good value, is very impressive.”
