The likeable Irishman is also effective: he’s credited with successfully integrating the Scottish & Newcastle business into Heineken after a tricky start, sorting out the on-trade estate and identifying how to unlock value in its cider portfolio.
Indeed he’s poured pressure on the much bigger AB InBev with a programme of innovation comprising new products and new flavours in both beer and cider, while acting in a statesman-like manner to push moderate drinking.
Heineken is also reportedly in the running to acquire Peroni and Grolsch, which would be the worst possible outcome for ABI.
