Since taking over in 2012 Whiteside has done a cracking job at Greggs. His first move was to bring the focus back to its core business - offering tasty food to go quickly and cheaply - so the food-to-go range has broadened to include soups, salads, paninis and pizza. And its most recent results show a 5.2% uptick in sales. After years of negative like for likes, that’s a real turnaround.
However, there are signs Whiteside could yet be led astray from the beautiful simplicity of a brace of sausage rolls in a paper bag. Even hinting he might introduce something as exotic as a flat white was blamed for a sharp plunge in the share price.
