Food companies can now check employees are washing their hands after using the toilet, thanks to thermal imaging specialists Irisys.

Employees are anonymously tagged using thermal sensors when they enter the bathroom. The hand wash is also hooked up to indicate usage. That enables companies to determine the percentage of employees using the hand wash.

The system was originally developed for hospitals, but food manufacturers, operators and retailers are also keen on using it to enforce hygiene standards.

“We are able to measure compliance anonymously and unobtrusively,” said Irisys COO Dr Ian Wilcock. “It can help give customers confidence in companies’ preparation processes.”
