A number of jobs are in jeopardy at First Milk’s cheese business as the company looks to streamline its operations. First Milk is the latest major dairy company to reveal that jobs could be on the line in a bid to boost efficiency. Staff reductions could come at First Milk’s Lake District creamery in Cumbria, where 11 of the 94 jobs could go, and at Haverfordwest creamery in Wales, where seven of 67 people are at risk.

“On an ongoing basis, we need to ensure not only that our ways of working at our production sites are as efficient and flexible as possible, but also that we are putting the milk our farmers supply into products and customers that deliver the best returns,” said First Milk chief executive Peter Humphreys.

The move follows Dairy Crest’s announcement last week that its Nottingham dairy may close.
