The managing director of The Wensleydale Creamery, David Hartley, has won an award for his contribution to the cheese industry at the World Cheese Awards.

Hartley was presented with the World Cheese Award for Exceptional Contribution to Cheese in recognition for his work on preserving the heritage of Wensleydale Cheese.

Bob Farrand, the Awards’ chairman and national director of the Guild of Fine Food, which organises the awards, said the award was given to individuals whose endeavours had a significant influence on the cheese sector. “David Hartley is a worthy winner for his devotion to keeping historic cheese making alive in Wensleydale, for his dedication to safeguarding Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese’s heritage and provenance, and for being a superb ambassador for the cheese industry.”

Hartley himself said 2010 had been an “extraordinary year” for The Wensleydale Creamery, and the award was “testament to the dedication, hard work and expertise of all our staff.”
