Indulgence has been a major element in the success of premium extra jams. So says Sandra Sharratt, category manager of Trustin Unimerchants, which distributes the French made Bonne Maman premium brand in the UK. "Diet and health considerations are important," she says. "But people still regard jam and marmalade as part of a relaxed breakfast and they're not prepared to sacrifice taste." Sharratt believes that Bonne Maman, which claims a 22% year on year increase in retail sales value for its jam, can use the popularity of continental soft set preserves to rejuvenate the declining marmalade sector as a whole. She says the premium marmalade range attracts younger, image conscious consumers. {{FOCUS SPECIALS }}
