The National Federation of Retail Newsagents has launched 'Use Us or Lose Us', a campaign to raise awareness of the threat independent retailers face from the major supermarkets.

The initiative began this week in Castlebar, County Mayo, and will involve all NFRN members in Ireland displaying posters encouraging customer loyalty. The NFRN is looking at introducing it to the UK if the initial scheme is a hit.

Peter Steemers, NFRN district president for the Republic, said the campaign would highlight the personalised service customers receive from independent retailers. He said it also aimed to remind them that failure to support these retailers would lead to their demise.

"It's time for us to highlight to consumers that if they don't use independent retailers, they will lose them," said Steemers.
