The European Parliament’s vote to scrap the opt-out clause in the EU Working Time Directive, which limits the working week to 48 hours, has prompted angry responses. The UK signed to opt out, the BRC said scrapping the clause could affect the competitiveness and productivity of the industry, while the Association of Convenience Stores argued that it would limit flexibility. The British government intends to appeal.
