Retailers in Birmingham and Solihull can draw on an £8m pot offered to six business sectors to boost staff training.
The cash is available through the region's Learning and Skills Council under the Train2gain project.
Over the next year, the money will fund a pilot programme giving 5,000 employees the opportunity to get Level 2 NVQ or basic skills qualifications.
Greggs has already joined the scheme. Carol Elderfield, personnel director of Greggs of the Midlands, called the scheme "an excellent means of investing in the futures of employees by training".
