Adnams is to open the first anaerobic digestion plant in the UK to run on brewery waste.

The plant, opening next month, will convert brewery waste, as well as food waste from the area, to produce 4.8 million kw/hr of gas a year.

The biomethane will at first go into the national grid but Adnams plans to eventually use it to power its operations.

Waste produced by the digester will be used to fertilise Adnam's barley crops.

"This facility will have a major impact on the reduction of carbon emissions in the region," said CEO Andy Wood.
