The position, which will take effect from October 15, will involve supervising the legal aspects of organisational transactions and the preparation of legal reports and statements.
Wakkie will also be responsible for ensuring that the company conforms to ethical and social standards.
Previously partner of the Dutch legal firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in 1979, Wakkie specialised in mergers and acquisitions and corporate litigation. He became managing partner from 1997 until 2001.
Acting chief executive of the group, Anders Moberg, said: “We are confident that Peter will make an important contribution toward ensuring solid corporate governance throughout the organisation.”
