Ahold has sold its Brazilian retail chain Bompreco to Wal-Mart, as predicted by The Grocer (The Grocer, June 14 2003, p12).

The £500m deal, which includes Ahold’s Hipercard credit card operation, takes Wal-Mart Brazil’s store tally to 143 units.

Bompreco operates 118 hypermarkets and supermarkets in north-eastern Brazil. Ahold’s Barbosa unit in Brazil was not included in the transaction. Separarately, Ahold has sold its stake in Thai joint venture CRC Ahold to its partner the Central Group, completing its withdrawal from Asia.
