Ahold USA is trialing technology pioneered by oil giant Exxon Mobil enabling customers to skip the queues and pay for goods by pointing a card at the checkout. The Speedpass system, tested at Ahold's Stop & Shop supermarket chain, also lets customers earn loyalty points without swiping a card. The system uses radio frequency technology to identify customers and automatically debit their accounts. The retailer benefits from reduced banking costs as Speedpass fees are lower than credit card transaction fees. {{NEWS }}
