Plans for a national animal welfare labelling system for food are being considered by the government.

As part of the Animal Welfare Delivery Strategy, which aims to raise animal care standards, the government is looking at putting animal welfare labelling on meat and fish packaging to give details of how the animals were looked after.

"This strategy suggests ways we can take responsibility for different aspects of this issue and work together to achieve good animal welfare - it's a subject that affects us all and we want to hear what others think of our vision,” said Ben Bradshaw, minister of state for local environment.
