The Association of News Retailing has intensified its lobbying of MPs to counter claims that changes to magazine distribution will severely damage independent retailers.
The ANR, the news wing of the Association of Convenience Stores, has written to MPs clarifying its positive reaction to the Office of Fair Trading’s draft guidelines on the news trade.
Wholesalers currently operate in exclusive territories agreed with publishers. The ANR has welcomed the OFT’s proposal that retailers be allowed to approach any wholesaler they want for magazines. John Lennon, ANR MD, said it would help to improve services and cut costs for retailers.
But the National Federation of Retail Newsagents and the Rural Shops Alliance claim it will be uneconomical for wholesalers to supply smaller retailers, thus threatening their existence.
