Plans are under way to raise the profile of asparagus in advance of the English season in May. The short six-week season is worth around £4m, and still regarded by many consumers as a "seasonal" luxury despite year-round imports.
Bomfords, one of the country's largest producers, is now looking to follow up last year's successful Asparagus Run to London.
Lucy Mellor, Bomford's marketing manager, said: "After the successful last minute event last year, we felt we wanted to do something a little bigger. In May another run is planned with growers from all major areas coming down to London to meet."
The Asparagus Growers Association conference is on March 26 in Peterborough. There will be an asparagus festival on May 25-26 in Evesham.
